Dental Hygienists

Dental hygienists are responsible for cleaning teeth, examining patients for signs of oral diseases such as gingivitis, and providing other preventive dental care. They also educate patients on ways to improve and maintain good oral health. Additionally, they may take and develop dental x-rays, apply fluoride or sealants, and assist dentists during procedures.

Education / Training

To become a Dental Hygienist, individuals typically need an associate degree in dental hygiene from a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. These programs usually require a high school diploma or equivalent for admission. Some hygienists may pursue a bachelor's or master's degree in dental hygiene, particularly for career advancement opportunities or teaching roles. High school education is necessary for this profession, but college-level education beyond that, such as an associate degree, is required to work as a Dental Hygienist. Training for Dental Hygienists involves a combination of classroom instruction and clinical practice. Students learn about oral anatomy, pathology, radiography, periodontology, and patient management. Clinical training includes hands-on experience working with patients under the supervision of licensed dentists or dental hygienists. After completing their education, graduates must also pass national and state licensure exams to become licensed dental hygienists and practice legally. Continuing education is often required to maintain licensure and stay up-to-date with advancements in the field.
